If you want a vigorous and intriguing vine for covering that fence, arbor, trellis or abandoned outbuilding, look no further than hops. From 1850-1900, New York State was the country's premier hop-growing region. Hops thrive in NY. This vine will impress you the first year with its growth rate, but in subsequent years is when it reveals its true strength. Rough palmately lobed leaves on twining stems that burst forth from the earth when soil warms; female flowers are in small cones which leave that unmistakeable hops bitterness when eaten directly off the vine in the garden (a small nibble is all it takes, and yes, it's legal to drive home with a potted hops vine in your car).
