Cornus rugosa - Roundleaf dogwood

Native shrub found on rocky, exposed sites with little or no soil--so you know it's tough. But like most dogwoods, it also has seasons of halting beauty. Spring flowers are in white lace-cap type heads, like most shrub dogwoods, and fall color blends red, purple, orange and all shades in between. Winter bark is red like other shrub dogwoods, and this one grows to what I'd call midsize--larger than redtwig but smaller than silky dogwood. Great for bird habitat--they prize the fruits.
