ABOUT US

At The Plantsmen Nursery, we combine extensive professional nursery and landscape experience with an environmental and aesthetic approach. We focus on growing and offering plants that are truly adapted to our region’s climate and soils. This is a big part of our success, and yours…if it doesn’t do well here, we don’t grow it, and we won’t sell it. We want your landscapes to look beautiful and perform well–fulfilling their important ecological functions for pollinators, habitat, revegetation, restoration, erosion control, and more. We balance those goals with the common landscape goals of our customers and clients: low-maintenance; screening/privacy; improving aesthetics and functional flows of foot traffic through the property; and maintaining or improving your curb appeal and property value. We also specialize in remodeling older landscapes that were installed many years ago and need minor or major updates and upgrades.

We are recognized as leaders in the environmental and native horticulture fields locally and regionally. Owner Dan Segal served a 2-year term as a National Board Member of Wild Ones, an organization dedicated to the conservation and appropriate use of native plants. Dan has presented to various groups all over the Northeast on native plants, native horticulture, and native landscaping. Dan founded and hosts the Ithaca Native Landscape Symposium (INLS), bringing in 5-10 speakers each year for the past 15 years. INLS educates about 150 people every year, giving professionals and home gardeners the tools and the confidence to work with native plants successfully.
Our crew leaders and management staff have been with us for many years and are instrumental in offering quality nursery plants, quality nursery service, and quality landscape work.
Dan and his wife Sarah have owned The Plantsmen since 2006.  During that time they have grown their roots in the surrounding community by supporting dozens of youth groups, schools and local charities; pioneering a safe and healthy No-Spray Growing Program at the nursery; offering various free educational programs sharing expertise and plants; and cultivating a network of local vendors that help keep The Plantsmen running smoothly.
Dan and Sarah have raised three children to adulthood here: Aaron, Sofia and Charlie.
